Congo Mapendo

It's been a long time since we've loved anything from the Congo, but this one really crushed it on our cupping table - and the backstory brought a smile to our face. This is exactly the kind of coffee we love sourcing.

From South Kivu, Mapendo is Swahili for "Love." This coop is farmed by small holders, of which 40% are women. The set-up of the coop has allowed them to open up more washing stations, including a new one with a cupping lab for quality control. Many of the women who are part of this coop are widows - victims of the instability in their country.

Grown at 2000MASL, this delicious coffee is of the famous SL34 variety, fully washed and Fair Trade certified. We'd put this coffee against any Kenyan, getting notes of dried cherry, caramel and a hint of lime.

DIRECT TRADE COFFEE

To us, direct trade means that we've visited the farm, have a relationship with the producer, and understand how much of the price the producer is getting - and we'll share that with you as the "farmgate" price.Text
